Enchanted Forest of Light has returned to Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, an interactive night-time experience that features a mile-long walk through the famed garden surrounded by stunning lighting experiences that glow with more than a million lights. Favorite light installations are back this year, including colorful “stained glass” houses by artist Tom Fruin and, on the Main Lawn, the sparking, twirling light sculptures by Los Angeles artist HYBYCOZO.

Preparations for this year’s Enchanted Forest began in December of 2021. Because there are more than a million lights on display, the locations, electric cables and sound effects must all be decided long before the lights are set up, according to Jennifer Errico, marketing manager for Descanso Gardens. Meanwhile, the widely popular annual “Carved” installation opened on October 1, featuring night-time glowing pumpkins, and it is still underway in the gardens, according to Errico.
Dozens of workers from lighting and design teams, contracted by Descanso Gardens, made sure each bulb was lit for opening night of Enchanted Forest. Returning visitors will find the tulip field is brighter, with new bulbs and colors added. Errico also says that “Easter eggs” — hidden surprises — have been placed throughout the display.
