How to Make a Tulip Arrangement

Tulips have to be one of the easiest flower arrangements to design, honestly! There are so many simple tulip arrangement ideas that you can easily make at home – even if you’ve never arranged flowers before.

Tulips can be found in most supermarkets in the spring, and Trader Joe’s is always a good bet. They’re also a common flower in early spring gardens, so there’s a good chance someone in your life is growing tulips each spring!

One reason tulips are perfect for simple flower arrangements is that there are so many colors and varieties to work with. Some of my favorite tulips are:

  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Pink
  • Purple
  • Red
  • White

There are also multi-colored tulips, tulips with vertical stripes, and even fringed tulips that grow with lacy-looking edges.

To start building simple tulip arrangements, choose one of your favorite vases and cut the stems to fit the vase’s height. Cutting the stems is always a good idea in general, as it helps the tulips gain access to the water.

What is the best vase for tulips?

There’s no one perfect vase for tulips, but it is important to make sure you choose a vase with a fairly wide base. Tulips have thick stems, so you’ll need plenty of space for several stems within the vase.

As you’ll see in the rest of this post, I love to display my tulip arrangements in unique containers. You definitely don’t have to use a traditional vase!

What goes with tulips in an arrangement?

Tulips look beautiful alone in an arrangement, which is often my favorite way to use them. But there are plenty of other flowers and greenery you can pair with tulips.

What flowers pair well with tulips?

Some of my favorite flowers to pair with tulips in a vase are roses, hyacinths, and daffodils. Roses and tulips come in similar colors and have similar shapes, so they look really beautiful in a vase together. Daffodils are another common spring flower. I love the idea of pairing tulips and daffodils in the same color in one arrangement.

What greenery goes with tulips?

In addition to using tulips’ own foliage, you can also incorporate eucalyptus greens, field greens, and even baby’s breath.

Should you put a penny in a vase of tulips?

Yes! It may sound like an old wives tale, but putting a penny in a vase of tulips can actually help keep the flowers from drooping and keep them looking fresh for longer. Learn more about why a penny can help a tulip arrangement stay beautiful.
